Little old Betaville has been ruminating on the Genteel Hustler's excellent scoop in yeseterday's The Sunday Times about Redbird IMI hiring Robey Warshaw to get its takeover of The Daily Telegraph over the line with the British regulators. Below is a link to Genteel's (also known as the William Turvill) scoop in case you missed it:..

Sunday, 31 December 2023, 1:42 pm

It's that time of the year when weekend newspapers look to fill their pages with predictions for the following twelve months.

And one prediction, in particular, by a chum at The Sunday Times stood out to little old Betaville today.

Jim "Armo" Armitage, The Sunday Times business editor, has tipped Vertu Motors because one his "Arthur Daley"-esque snouts has suggested 2024 will be the year the car dealer gets a takeover bid...

Monday, 4 December 2023, 8:26 am

Shares in 888 Holdings have leapt more than 10pc this morning following Oliver Gill's scoop in The Sunday Times this morning about a secret takeover bid from Playtech in July pitched at 156p a share.

Hat tip to the intrepid hack for digging that scoop out - for reasons I won't go into now it's getting harder and harder these days for business reporters to find genuine scoops of that ilk. Below is a link to Olly's piece:..

I see old Mark "The Kleinmanator" Kleinman of Sky News, a former collegue during our time on The Daily Telegraph's city desk, dug out a scoop earlier this week about Butternut Box, Europe's largest posh dog food maker.

Below is a link to Kleiny's "scoop" about an investment in Butternut Box from General Atlantic that valued the business at around £500 million:..

Monday, 7 August 2023, 7:36 am

Tucked away in the back of Oliver "Shahsy" Shah's business comment column in yesterday's The Sunday Times was a line about what retail billionaire Mike Ashley might do next at Asos, the London-listed fashion retailer.

Loyal readers will know that Frasers Group, the retail giant controlled by Ashley, has been building up a sizeable shareholding in fashion retailer Asos, which late last year received a takeover approach from Turkish firm Trendyol...

The Genteel Hustler is returning to national newspaper business journalism.

Genteel, also known as Will Turvill, has just been snapped up by chums and colleagues at The Sunday Times business section, and will be covering media amongst other things.

In case you don't recall, Genteel picked up his moniker during our time working on the Mail on Sunday's business section for his extremely polite but persistent story-hustling style...
