Ocado may be a takeover target for Amazon, reports The Times - Part 3

Wednesday, 28 June 2023, 12:38 pm

Shares in London-listed online food grocer Ocado have dropped like a stone, sliding almost 10pc at pixel time.

The trigger for the decline appears to be a piece out on American business news channel CNBC, suggesting Amazon has denied any interest in purchasing Ocado.

The whole piece on CNBC is a bit odd because the main item is based on Zoom interview with James Lockyer, a Peel Hunt analyst...

Ocado may be a takeover target for Amazon, reports The Times - Part 2

Thursday, 22 June 2023, 10:28 am

Ocado shares are currently up around 43pc at pixel time.

There has been no confirmation, yet, of Dom Walsh's takeover story in today's The Times so little old Betaville assumes there could be a bit of short squeeze going on here, especially as Ocado is one of the most shorted stocks in the London market.

According to data provider Shortracker.co.uk, around 6.1pc of Ocado's stock is on loan to short sellers. Below is a link to Shortracker.co.uk:..

Ocado may be a takeover target for Amazon, reports The Times

Wednesday, 21 June 2023, 9:37 pm

Dom Walsh, veteran retail hack over on the The Times business section, has dug up an interesting takeover tale about another London-listed online retailer.

According to Dom's piece, Ocado - whose shares have collapsed almost 50pc over the last year - might be of interest to an American suitor, possibly even Amazon.

Now, that's not the first time such a theory has been aired but you never know perhaps 2023 will be the year it actually happens.....

Mocado -Part 3

Tuesday, 5 March 2019, 7:30 pm

I see Betaville's friends over at the Evening Standard's business section have followed up this NM Rothschild conflict of interest line and landed up a rather juicy scoop in the process.

Indeed, Russ Lynch dug out the fact that Rothschild banker Nigel Higgins, the soon-to-be chairman of scandal hit Barclays, was in fact working for John Lewis/Waitrose on an almost identical deal just a few months ago...

Mocado -Part 2

Impressive: the chaps at NM Rothschild have turned up as lead financial adviser to Marks & Spencer on its JV deal with Ocado.

So, the venerable merchant is now lead adviser to three of the largest food retailers in the UK - Asda/Wal-Mart, Wm Morrison and now Marks & Spencer (from memory previously Citigroup/Schroders led the charge for M&S)...

Mocado...

Mocado, Markado and Ocamark. These are just some of the monikers being used to describe the latest Marks & Spencer / Ocado joint venture tie-up.

Anyway, hat tip to the Evening Standard's Russell Lynch for smoking out the latest iteration of the deal with his scoop today in the paper about the impending transaction. Below is a link to Russell Lynch's piece in case you missed it:..

Sunday review - Marks & Spencer, Ocado and Paddy Power Betfair/Stars Group

Sunday, 27 January 2019, 3:42 pm

Betaville's friends and colleagues on the Sunday papers were clearly working hard last week at digging up stories that make you perk up over your Sunday morning fry up.

Indeed, one of the stand out scoops of the weekend was Neil Craven's blockbuster jackanory in the Mail on Sunday about Marks & Spencer's talks about a combination of sorts with online grocer Ocado. Below is the link:..

Those Ocado bid rumours...

Tuesday, 20 June 2017, 6:42 pm

I see almost all of the business sections of the quality British newspapers ran with the Amazon-for-Ocado bid rumour today, with some publications even dedicating a whole page lead to the takeover speculation.

No surprises, there, I suppose. Amazon's sensational $13.7 billion move on Whole Foods in the US late last week has got tongues wagging in the Square Mile about how the American online retail giant plans to take on the British grocery market...
